bio
Scholarly research notes that New Orleans' Baby Doll masking and dance traditions date back to at least 1912, emerging as a prominent feature of the city's early twentieth-century "Jass" culture (Louisiana State Museum). While the tradition waned over time, it experienced a significant resurgence following Hurricane Katrina, propelled in large part by the 2005 revival efforts of The New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies™.
Rooted in the historic practice of women's masking, performance, and cultural expression, The New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies™ have become one of the most visible and celebrated ambassadors of this uniquely New Orleans tradition. Renowned for their porcelain-inspired face artistry, elaborate costuming, dynamic choreography, and immersive audience engagement, the ensemble presents a distinctive blend of dance, chant, theatrical storytelling, and original performance works inspired by the rich musical traditions of New Orleans.
For nearly two decades, The New Orleans Baby Doll Ladies™ have appeared on concert stages, at major festivals, museums, universities, corporate events, and cultural institutions throughout the United States, introducing audiences to a living tradition that is both historic and contemporary. Their work celebrates the creativity, resilience, and cultural contributions of Black women while creating meaningful artistic and professional development opportunities for emerging and established performing artists.
